Chiefs defeat Chargers 22-6 as defense dominates and several players stand out
Kansas City held Los Angeles to six points, forcing two turnovers and limiting the Chargers to zero touchdowns, while several Chiefs contributors earned praise and a few struggled.
Kansas City maintained its unbeaten start to the season with a 22-6 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium. The Chiefs outgained their opponents 422 yards to 259 and kept the Chargers out of the end zone, forcing two turnovers and applying consistent pressure on the quarterback.
Quarterback Patrick Mahomes spread the ball to all available receivers, with wideout Xavier Worthy catching seven passes for 73 yards, becoming Mahomes' most reliable target in the absence of Rashee Rice and Tyquan Thornton. The tight-end group—Noah Gray, Travis Kelce and Jake Briningstool—combined for 106 yards on seven catches, while Briningstool contributed key blocks on the ground game.
Running back Kenneth Walker tallied 21 touches for nearly 140 yards, including a 33-yard touchdown run on third-and-1. Edge rusher George Karlaftis added three quarterback hits, two tackles for loss, two batted passes and a sack, highlighting the Chiefs' improving pass rush.
Defensive back Nohl Williams recorded two pass defenses and a tackle for loss, and linebacker Jack Cochrane intercepted a pass and returned it 48 yards, setting up a scoring opportunity for Kansas City.
The loss column included return specialist Nikko Remigio, who fumbled a punt and nearly lost a kickoff, and kicker Harrison Butker, who missed a field goal and an extra point. The short-yardage offense also struggled, failing to convert a fourth-and-goal from the one-yard line, and center Creed Humphrey experienced a low-snap issue that affected the run game.
Overall, the Chiefs controlled the game from start to finish, despite turnovers, missed kicks and penalties, and will look to address the highlighted shortcomings ahead of the next matchup.
