NATO Initiates 'Eastern Sentry' Operation in Response to Russian Drone Incursions
NATO has launched Operation 'Eastern Sentry' to bolster its eastern defenses following recent Russian drone violations of Polish airspace.
NATO has initiated Operation 'Eastern Sentry' to strengthen its eastern defenses after multiple Russian drones violated Polish airspace. The operation, announced by NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, aims to enhance the alliance's posture and readiness in response to these incursions.
The decision follows an incident where at least 19 Russian drones entered Polish territory during a large-scale attack on Ukraine. Polish forces, supported by NATO allies, intercepted and shot down several of these drones. This marked the first known instance of a NATO member engaging directly with Russian unmanned aerial vehicles since the onset of the Ukraine conflict.
In response to the airspace violations, Poland invoked NATO's Article 4, prompting consultations among member nations regarding potential threats to national security. This invocation underscores the seriousness with which Poland views these incursions and the collective defense mechanisms of the alliance.
Operation 'Eastern Sentry' will involve contributions from several NATO members, including Denmark, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom. Assets such as F-16s, Rafale fighters, Eurofighter jets, and a Danish frigate are expected to be deployed. The operation is designed to be flexible and adaptive, covering the entire eastern flank of NATO from the High North to the Black Sea and the Mediterranean.
NATO's Supreme Allied Commander Europe, General Alexus Grynkewich, emphasized the operation's comprehensive and integrated approach, stating that it will provide a more strategic defense design compared to previous individual air-policing actions.
The launch of 'Eastern Sentry' reflects NATO's commitment to defending its territory and responding decisively to any violations of its airspace. The alliance continues to monitor the situation closely and is prepared to take further measures as necessary to ensure the security of its member states.
