Five-year-old among victims in Oregon elementary school shooting
A gunman opened fire in a special-needs classroom at Silver Rail Elementary in Bend, killing a 5-year-old boy, a 25-year-old teacher and two other children, while a bystander shot the attacker.
A shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon, left four children and a teacher dead and several others injured. Police said an armed bystander fatally shot the teenage gunman after the attacker entered a special-needs classroom just before 1 p.m.
Bend Mayor Melanie Kebler said, "A school should be a safe place where children can learn and feel secure. What happened today should never happen."
The victims identified so far include Rhoam Summer, a 5-year-old student, and Megan Lambert, a 25-year-old substitute teacher who had recently become a full-time teacher at the school. Two additional children, ages 8 and 11, were not named at the request of their families.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz reported that officers arrived to find two boys and the teacher dead, and that medics attempted lifesaving care on another boy who was later stabilized in serious condition at a hospital. A 7-year-old child, who was shot in the face and is in a wheelchair, remains in serious condition after surgery.
Another teacher, Becky Drury, 54, sustained serious but non-life-threatening injuries. A third teacher, who was not named, threw a cellphone at the shooter and tackled him, an action police said likely prevented further casualties.
The shooter, identified as a former special-needs student at the school, was stopped after a bystander, Kaylub Giamanco, entered the classroom where the gunman and a teacher were engaged in a physical altercation and shot the attacker. The motive for the attack is still under investigation.
Family members of the victims expressed gratitude for community support and requested privacy as they cope with the tragedy.
