Rams coach says blocked field goal likely would have missed, announces new kicker
Sean McVay stated that the missed 48-yard field goal attempt against the Bills probably would not have been successful, and the team has promoted Blake Grupe to replace Harrison Mevis.
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay said the overtime loss to the Buffalo Bills was decided by the field-goal unit. He added that, even without the block by defensive end Gregory Rousseau, the 48-yard attempt by kicker Harrison Mevis likely would have missed because the trajectory was off-line. "I didn’t think it would have gone in, I did not," McVay told reporters on Friday, acknowledging he could be wrong.
Following the game, Mevis was released from the roster and the Rams promoted Blake Grupe to handle kicking duties. McVay described Grupe as having a calm demeanor and confidence, and expressed optimism about his ability to contribute, especially on extra points.
Special-teams coordinator Bubba Ventrone highlighted Grupe’s leg strength and range, noting his career-long of 60 yards provides the team with more flexibility for late-game field-goal attempts. Ventrone praised Grupe’s elevation and accuracy, saying he looks forward to working with the new kicker.
