Ohtani says he will return as two-way player next season
Shohei Ohtani indicated his intention to pitch and hit for the Dodgers again next year, noting disappointment at missing postseason innings and outlining his offseason focus.
Shohei Ohtani told reporters after the Dodgers’ NLCS loss that he plans to resume his role as a two-way player for the 2026 season. He expressed frustration about not being able to pitch in the postseason and said he wants to have a productive offseason to improve his performance.
"I intend on doing everything," Ohtani said in Japanese.
"That’s a point of dissatisfaction," he added, referring to his inability to pitch during the playoffs.
"Of course, I feel like I want to continue [playing both ways]. Because of that, I want to have a good offseason," Ohtani said.
The 33-year-old did not specify any planned changes to his training or pitching schedule, but indicated that he will consider options to stay healthy through the regular season and into the postseason. Dodgers manager Dave Roberts previously noted that Ohtani was dealing with discomfort in his right arm and left knee during the September injury list placement.
The team will need to decide how to manage Ohtani’s workload, including possible adjustments to his pitching rotation or rest periods, to maximize his contributions both on the mound and at the plate.
