Seahawks coach says Sam Darnold's starting role remains secure
Head coach Mike Macdonald stated that quarterback Sam Darnold will retain his starting position despite recent turnovers and a loss to the Broncos.
Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald told reporters that Sam Darnold’s job as the team’s starting quarterback is not in jeopardy, despite the quarterback’s mixed performance in the recent loss to the Denver Broncos. The Seahawks fell 23-21 in overtime after Darnold threw two interceptions, including a pick-six, and was sacked a season-high five times. The defeat left Seattle at 3-3, matching the total number of losses the team had at the same point last season and putting the club 2.5 games behind the undefeated San Francisco 49ers in the NFC West.
Macdonald emphasized that the coaching staff will continue to evaluate Darnold’s health and readiness, noting that the quarterback is healing faster than expected after a glute-tendon strain suffered in Week 1. He added that the team will make a decision by Friday on whether Darnold will be available for the upcoming game against the Washington Commanders.
"He’s healing faster than anyone had imagined, but we want to be cautious with him," Macdonald said.
In the meantime, backup quarterback Drew Lock is expected to start the next game, with Darnold projected to return as a possible starter by Week 4 at the latest. The Seahawks will look to limit turnovers and improve offensive consistency as they prepare for a home matchup against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 7.
