Philadelphia Eagles add quarterback Joe Milton to active roster
The Eagles signed former Patriots and Cowboys practice-squad quarterback Joe Milton to their 53-man roster as they seek depth after Jalen Hurts was placed on the injured list.
Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Eagles announced Friday that they have signed quarterback Joe Milton to their 53-man roster, acquiring him from the Dallas Cowboys' practice squad. Milton, a 2024 sixth-round pick of the New England Patriots, appeared in one game for New England in Week 18 of the 2024 season, completing 22 of 29 passes for 241 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions, and also scoring a rushing touchdown. He was later traded to the Cowboys, where he played in four games during the 2025 season, completing 15 of 24 passes for 183 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while adding 50 rushing yards on five carries.
Milton, listed at 6-5 and 236 pounds, is noted for his strong arm and physical profile. Scouts have highlighted his size and arm strength but also pointed to areas needing improvement, including timing, accuracy and consistency. A scouting report from Lance Zierlein described him as a “rare physical specimen” with “arm talent,” while noting challenges with deep-throw accuracy and improvisation.
The signing comes as the Eagles address quarterback depth after starting quarterback Jalen Hurts was ruled out indefinitely due to a superficial blood clot. Backup Tanner McKee is slated to start the upcoming game against the Carolina Panthers, with rookie Cole Payton listed as the next option. The team previously considered re-signing veteran Andy Dalton, who spent the offseason in Philadelphia, but opted to add the younger Milton instead.
Milton's addition also provides the Eagles with insight ahead of their Week 7 matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, the team from which he was acquired.
