Putin Presents Inflated Battlefield Gains in Kremlin Video Amid Trump Support

Summary

A Kremlin-produced video showed President Vladimir Putin announcing exaggerated territorial gains in Ukraine, claims that were disputed by independent analysts and even some pro-Kremlin commentators.

President Vladimir Putin appeared in a Kremlin-released video on Friday at a command post of Russia’s Joint Group of Forces, accompanied by Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov. Dressed in military attire, Putin read from briefing papers and announced that Russian forces had seized about 6,500 square kilometres of Ukrainian territory, a figure roughly 45 percent higher than estimates from independent monitors.

Gerasimov echoed the claims, asserting that Russian troops had reached within three miles of Zaporizhzhia, a distance that open-source mapping projects place at about twelve miles. The statements contradicted earlier reports that the city of Kupyansk, which Gerasimov also said was under Russian control, remains contested.

Analysts from the Institute for the Study of War and other open-source observers described the assertions as inaccurate. Some pro-Kremlin Telegram channels, such as Nash Regnum and Alex Parker Returns, mocked the briefing, questioning the credibility of the claims and suggesting that President Donald Trump might be misled.

The Defense Ministry has faced repeated criticism for overstating battlefield progress, a pattern that coincides with diplomatic engagements involving the United States. The Kremlin’s timing of such announcements often aligns with visits by Trump’s envoys and discussions aimed at easing sanctions and unfreezing assets valued at roughly €260 billion.
