Mother of RJ Mitte Describes Finding Son After Suicide
RJ Mitte's mother, Dyna Mitte, told NBC News she discovered her 34-year-old son dead at home and reflected on missed opportunities for mental-health support.
Dyna Mitte, mother of actor RJ Mitte, said she found her son unresponsive at home on Monday after calling him at 11 a.m. and delivering lunch. She told NBC News that the 34-year-old had spent the previous weekend with family and friends and that no note was left, suggesting the decision may have been made suddenly.
Mitte said she had encouraged her son to seek therapy for the three months prior to his death, but he declined, insisting he could handle his own issues. She expressed regret that she did not intervene more forcefully, saying she would have taken him to a therapist even if it required “screaming and yelling.”
"If me speaking out today might save someone else from going through the same situation, because a mother should never have to find their child this way, I would consider that a tribute to RJ," she said.
Mitte described her son as a “special soul” who loved his cast and crew on the series "Breaking Bad," where he played Walter “Flynn” White Jr. A representative confirmed the cause of death as suicide, while the manner of death awaits autopsy results.
Former co-stars Bryan Cranston and Anna Gunn posted tributes, with Cranston noting recent text exchanges and expressing sorrow over the loss, and Gunn recalling meeting Mitte when he was 14 and praising his talent.
