Collins and Jackson clash after protester interrupts Maine Senate debate

Resumen

Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Troy Jackson exchanged barbs during their final Maine Senate debate after a demonstrator shouted about AI data centers and climate change.

A protester interrupted the final debate between Republican Sen. Susan Collins and Democratic challenger Troy Jackson in Maine, shouting that AI data centers were "destroying our climate" and "poisoning our water." Security removed the demonstrator, and Collins suggested the individual was a supporter of Jackson. > "So, this is obviously one of Troy's supporters," Collins said. Jackson denied any connection, responding, "Oh, shut up, I did not — I didn't, I don't even know who that kid."

During the hour-long debate, the candidates traded remarks on a range of issues, including the war in Iran, immigration, fuel prices, electricity rates, budget deficits, Supreme Court reform, dark-money politics, gun control and climate policy. Jackson questioned whether Collins looked down on working-class people, to which Collins replied that she did not and highlighted her own upbringing in Caribou, Maine. > "I grew up in Caribou. My first job was picking potatoes," she said.

Jackson again linked Collins to President Donald Trump, stating that she would support him whenever needed. Collins countered by emphasizing her independent voting record, describing herself as the most bipartisan member of the Senate and warning against electing legislators who vote strictly along party lines. > "We don’t need more people who are going to vote a straight party line," she said.

Polls show the race within the margin of error, and political analysts rate it as a toss-up. The contest is viewed as a key opportunity for Democrats to flip a Senate seat in a state that voted for the opposing party’s presidential candidate in 2024.
