Authorities in Salt Lake City, Utah, have arrested two men following the discovery of an incendiary device placed under a news media vehicle. The device had been ignited but failed to detonate.
On Friday, police and fire department bomb squads responded to reports of a suspicious device located beneath a vehicle parked near an occupied building. Investigators determined that the device "had been lit but failed to function as designed," according to court records cited by CBS affiliate KUTV.
The FBI identified two suspects and executed a search warrant at a residence in Magna, west of downtown Salt Lake City. Two men, aged 58 and 31, were arrested and could face charges related to weapons possession and threats of terrorism.
During the search, neighboring homes were evacuated. Authorities discovered explosives, firearms, illegal narcotics, and bomb-making materials. Additionally, two devices were found that turned out to be hoax weapons of mass destruction.
No information about a possible motive has been released, and the relationship between the two suspects remains unknown.
The incident occurred amid increased media presence in Salt Lake City following the recent assassination of Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk.
