Danny Trejo says he is not pro-ICE amid controversy over Daily Wire film
Actor Danny Trejo clarified that he does not support ICE after criticism for appearing in a thriller produced by The Daily Wire, saying his role is that of a peace-loving Mexican shop owner.
Actor Danny Trejo, 82, said he is not pro-ICE after criticism for joining a thriller with the working title “Pawn Shop,” which is being produced by The Daily Wire, a conservative media outlet founded by Ben Shapiro. Trejo posted on Instagram that he is a proud Mexican, supports his community and immigrants, and that his job as an actor is to tell a story.
Trejo’s son, Gilbert Trejo, said his father was unaware of Shapiro’s involvement until two weeks into filming and had to be briefed on Shapiro’s public profile.
"I am a proud Mexican who has always been and will always be a supporter of my community. I am also obviously pro immigrant. I am not pro ice," Trejo wrote on Oct. 9.
Gilbert Trejo added that his father is contractually bound and cannot publicly criticize the project without risking a breach-of-contract lawsuit. The film, shot in Livingston, Montana, also features Harvey Keitel, who is represented by a different agency.
The movie’s synopsis on IMDB describes a chaotic situation in Minneapolis where a federal agent, a traditional Hispanic father, and his progressive son are forced to confront fear and conflicting beliefs while trapped in a pawn shop.
