Troy Aikman says he will be a free agent after this season amid reports of tension with Joe Buck
Troy Aikman acknowledged he will be without a contract after the current season and did not deny reports of tension with fellow Monday Night Football analyst Joe Buck.
Former Dallas Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman told Sportsradio 96.7 in Dallas that he will remain on Monday Night Football through the season and will be a free agent afterward. He said he is "looking forward to whatever the rest of this year does hold and the Super Bowl and all that, and where my next landing spot might be."
When asked whether a report of tension with broadcast partner Joe Buck was accurate, Aikman did not refute the claim, noting that "there's probably a time and a place for all that to be discussed" and that he was unsure if now was the appropriate moment.
The speculation stems from a Front Office Sports report that the two analysts argued after Buck signed a new contract with Disney/ABC/ESPN while Aikman's deal expires at the end of the season. Both men have continued to work together, including the upcoming Super Bowl broadcast on ESPN, but no further comment has been provided by ESPN or Buck.
Aikman's contract status and the reported disagreement have drawn attention to the broader landscape of former players serving as analysts, with another former Cowboys quarterback, Tony Romo, also facing a contract transition after his departure from CBS.
