Progressives view Michigan Senate race as test for their movement and AOC's future plans

Résumé

Democratic candidate Abdul El-Sayed is touring Michigan with progressive leader Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez as the state’s Senate race becomes a focal point for the party’s ideological debate and a potential boost for Ocasio-Cortez’s 2028 ambitions.

Democratic Senate hopeful Abdul El-Sayed is touring Michigan with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez ahead of the November election, a move that progressive leaders say could signal the strength of their wing in a traditionally Republican-leaning region.

Republican state Sen. Mike Rogers, speaking at a campaign stop in Highland, said the bus tour may fill up for El-Sayed and warned that the candidate could face a cold reception in the Upper Peninsula, adding that the effort suggests the campaign is "desperate."

The visit arrives 19 days before Election Day, a period when national party figures typically intensify their campaigning. Ocasio-Cortez told The New York Times that she will consider three options for the 2028 election cycle: seeking re-election to the House, running for Senate, or launching a presidential bid. She said the timing offers a "unique political window" and that opportunities in politics often arise only once.

Michigan, which has voted for the winning presidential candidate in the last five elections, also hosts the fifth contest on the 2028 Democratic primary calendar, giving the state outsized influence in the nomination process.

Progressive members of the House Democratic Caucus argue that a loss for El-Sayed would reinforce a narrative that progressive candidates hurt the party’s brand in swing states, while moderate members worry that such candidates are perceived as too extreme. The outcome of the Michigan race is expected to shape that internal debate.
