Ricky Hatton, the former world boxing champion, has died at the age of 46. He was found deceased at his home in Greater Manchester on Sunday morning. Police stated that there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.
Hatton, known as "The Hitman," held world titles in the light-welterweight and welterweight divisions during his 15-year professional career. He amassed 45 wins in 48 bouts, with notable victories including his 2005 win over Kostya Tszyu. His undefeated streak ended with losses to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2007 and Manny Pacquiao in 2009.
Beyond his achievements in the ring, Hatton was celebrated for his aggressive fighting style and charisma. He was also open about his struggles with mental health, including battles with depression and substance abuse. In 2023, he became an ambassador for the mental health charity Campaign Against Living Miserably.
Tributes have poured in from the boxing community. Former opponent Manny Pacquiao described Hatton as "not only a great fighter inside the ring but also a brave and kind man in life." Fellow British boxer Amir Khan referred to him as "a friend, a mentor, a warrior."
Hatton was a lifelong fan of Manchester City Football Club. The club honored him with a minute of appreciation during their match against Manchester United.
Hatton's death comes just two months after he announced a planned return to the ring in December.
