Apple iPhone Duo launches with higher price and several feature trade-offs versus iPhone 18 Pro models

Summary

Apple's new $1,999 iPhone Duo offers a foldable 7.6-inch inner display but costs $700-$800 more than the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max and omits several camera and hardware features.

Apple introduced the iPhone Duo, a foldable smartphone that starts at $1,999 for 256 GB. The device features a 5.4-inch outer screen that opens to a 7.6-inch inner display, enabling side-by-side app use and larger reading areas. All three models – the Duo, iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max – share the A20 Pro processor, ProMotion displays with up to 120 Hz refresh rates, a 48-megapixel Ultra-Wide camera, MagSafe, and USB-C with USB 3 speeds.

Compared with the Pro models, the Duo is $800 pricier than the iPhone 18 Pro and $700 more than the Pro Max at equivalent storage. The higher cost reflects the foldable design and a series of trade-offs. Face ID is replaced by a side-button Touch ID, the customizable Action button is removed, and MagSafe wallet compatibility is not supported because of the phone’s shape. The Duo is eSIM-only worldwide, lacking a physical SIM slot available on some Pro models.

The outer display is smaller than the Pro screens (5.4 inches versus 6.3 inches and 6.9 inches), and the inner screen’s pixel density is 430 ppi, slightly lower than the 460 ppi of the Pro displays. A visible crease appears on the folding screen under certain lighting, and the inner screen uses a replaceable polymer cover layer that costs $49 to service without AppleCare+.

Physically, the Duo measures 84.1 mm wide, 11.3 mm thick and weighs 254 g, making it narrower but thicker and heavier than the Pro models. Battery life is rated for up to 24 hours of typical use, matching the smaller Pro but falling short of the Pro Max’s 30-hour rating. Video playback times are also lower on the inner display.

Camera capabilities are reduced: the Duo lacks the Pro models’ 48-megapixel 4× telephoto lens, variable apertures, LiDAR scanner, ProRAW, ProRes, Apple Log 2, and several professional controls. The front camera on the outer display is 12 MP with an f/2.2 aperture, while the inner under-display camera is limited to 1080p video and lacks Night mode and Photographic Styles.

Ownership costs are higher. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss costs $19.99 per month for the Duo versus $14.99 for the Pro models. Repair fees for inner-display damage are $99 with AppleCare+ and $999 out-of-warranty, compared with $29 and $329 respectively for the Pro screens. Battery replacement without coverage is $229, versus $129 for the Pro devices.

Apple says the Duo’s sustained performance is up to 35 % better than the iPhone 17 Pro, slightly below the 40 % improvement quoted for the iPhone 18 Pro models. The phone is offered in Night Sky and Star White, while the Pro line includes four color options.

Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo begin on Friday, October 16, with shipments slated to start on October 23.
