CPI Report Shows 0.6% Monthly Rise, Democrats Criticize Trump Administration

Résumé

The September Consumer Price Index increased 0.6% month-over-month, prompting Democratic leaders to criticize President Trump’s economic policies ahead of the 2026 midterms.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers rose 0.6% on a seasonally adjusted basis in September, following a 0.4% increase in August. Over the prior 12 months, the all-items index was up 3.7% before seasonal adjustment, while the food index remained unchanged for the month after modest gains in the two preceding months.

Democratic officials responded on social media, with House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar stating that inflation and rising costs for gas and groceries reflect a "total failure" of the current economy. House Democratic Whip Katherine Clark added that families are struggling to afford basic necessities and expressed confidence that Democrats will win in November.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also criticized the administration, attributing higher prices to recent policy choices.

A White House spokesperson countered that President Trump’s economic agenda has reduced inflation from previously high levels, kept food prices stable, and supported job growth and wage gains. The spokesperson highlighted recent tax cuts, prescription-drug price reductions, and trade agreements as evidence of the administration’s impact on affordability.
