Cornell University bans fraternity house parties amid sexual assault lawsuit

Summary

Cornell announced a university-wide ban on fraternity house parties and additional support measures after a lawsuit alleged a 2024 drug-facilitated rape at a fraternity event.

Cornell University said it will prohibit all parties at fraternity houses for the remainder of the academic year as it responds to a civil lawsuit alleging a 2024 drug-facilitated sexual assault at a fraternity gathering. The university’s president, Michael Kotlikoff, issued a statement outlining the new policy and additional steps to improve support for survivors of sexual misconduct.

"I am deeply sorry for the harm Jane Doe suffered in 2024, and appalled that this act of sexual violence occurred within our Cornell community," Kotlikoff said. "It is clear that women on our campus continue to question whether they are safe. We must meet this moment by acknowledging where we have fallen short and taking meaningful action," he added.

The university also said it will allow New York State Police trauma-informed officers to investigate sexual assault allegations, provide more staff to assist survivors in reporting incidents, and help them navigate support services under Title IX requirements. Violations of the new party ban will result in suspension.

A lawyer for the plaintiff, identified as Jane Doe, said the lawsuit aims to improve Cornell’s response to abuse claims.

"While the steps announced today are helpful to achieve this goal, they are too late to protect Ms Doe," attorney Thomas Giuffra said.

Faculty Senate members are scheduled to debate confidence in the administration’s handling of the situation, with a potential no-confidence vote slated for later. The case has drawn attention to past allegations of binge-drinking and hazing associated with fraternity culture nationwide.
