SeaWorld temporarily shuts down Mako coaster after Georgia fatality raises safety concerns
SeaWorld Orlando has closed its Mako roller coaster while engineers review its restraint system following a death on a similar ride at Six Flags Over Georgia.
SeaWorld Orlando announced the temporary closure of its Mako roller coaster, one of five Bolliger & Mabillard coasters at the park, as engineers and safety experts inspect the ride’s restraint system after a fatal incident on a similar coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia. The park said the ride, which opened in 2016 and has operated without major mechanical issues for a decade, will remain closed until the inspection is complete.
The incident in Mableton, Georgia, involved a man who fell from the Goliath coaster and struck the ride, prompting scrutiny of other Bolliger & Mabillard attractions in Central Florida, including coasters at SeaWorld, Universal’s Islands of Adventure and Busch Gardens Tampa.
"I would be very concerned," attorney Michael Haggard said, noting the need to examine whether dual restraint systems are adequate.
SeaWorld released a statement expressing condolences to those affected by the Georgia accident and reaffirming its commitment to safety standards, while the co-owner of Bolliger & Mabillard said the company is investigating the incident. Busch Gardens confirmed that its rides from the same manufacturer remain open, and inquiries were made to Universal Orlando Resort regarding its Hulk coaster. No timeline has been provided for Mako’s reopening.
