Security footage shows Kelly Clarkson's brief visit to Brooklyn novelty shop

Summary

Released video captures Kelly Clarkson's short trip to Art of Play, where she and store staff discuss a $15,000 bird automaton that the shop says is not for sale.

Security footage obtained by podcast host Pablo Torre shows singer Kelly Clarkson entering the Brooklyn novelty store Art of Play with her children. Dressed in a baseball hat, bright yellow T-shirt, baggy jeans and a backpack, she browses the shop for less than five minutes, handling several items before leaving.

During the visit, an employee approaches Clarkson near a mechanical bird display and points to an object, though the video does not reveal what was indicated. The store later issued a statement that the bird is permanently mounted on the wall and is not for sale, adding that it is used in the shop’s magic shows.

Clarkson responded on social media, noting the employee’s tone and the price tag displayed on a nearby “Singing Bird” sign. She wrote, "Cool, cool. Sure, it wasn’t for sale. That’s the narrative Art of Play is gonna go with 👍 so the whole conversation we had when I asked you if it was for sale whilst pointing to the price tag hanging on the wall with the title Singing Bird didn’t happen as you elevator eyed me saying in a condescending tone ‘yes, it’s for sale but it costs 15,000 dollars so if you’d like me to find something comparable for you I can.’"

After the interaction, Clarkson puts the items she had taken back and speaks briefly with another employee behind the counter, appearing upset. Store owner Adam Rubin told Inside Edition that the shop has experienced a surge of negative online reviews and harassment following the incident, saying, "We are afraid for the safety of our shopkeepers. Kelly Clarkson has put us in danger… Things changed when she used her platform to attack us. It’s just social warfare."

Art of Play describes itself as a specialty curiosity shop and online retailer. The released footage adds visual context to the dispute that began after Clarkson posted a critical comment on X, alleging the staff treated her as if she could not afford the $15,000 automaton.
