Dodgers weigh benching Shohei Ohtani amid NLCS deficit and injury concerns
Los Angeles manager Dave Roberts said he will discuss Ohtani's health and role with the player after the Dodgers fell behind 2-0 to Milwaukee in the National League Championship Series.
Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said he will meet with Shohei Ohtani tomorrow to assess the two-way star's health and determine the best course for the team. Roberts noted that Ohtani "doesn't feel great" and that the conversation is warranted given his recent performance and injury issues.
The Dodgers are down 2-0 to the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series. Ohtani, who has not pitched since early July and has spent time on the injured list, went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts in Game 2, lowering his postseason batting average to .150. He has recorded a single RBI since August 19 and has not hit a home run since the previous day.
According to ESPN reporter Aiden Gonzalez, Ohtani would only sit if he believes his injuries – a left-knee issue and a right-bicep strain – compromise his performance. If he feels able to play, the plan is to keep him in the lineup.
Should the team decide to bench Ohtani, a source cited by The Athletic indicated rookie Josue De Paula could take his place. De Paula, who debuted in September, has had two walks in three postseason plate appearances.
