South Africa suffer 214-run loss to Australia in Durban Test
Australia defeated South Africa by 214 runs in the first Test of a three-match series, raising questions about the Proteas' batting and bowling ahead of upcoming fixtures.
Australia secured a 214-run victory over South Africa in Durban, winning the first Test of a three-match series 390 & 314-6 dec to 284 & 206. Josh Hazlewood claimed career-best figures of 6-49, while Matt Renshaw scored 190 for the visitors. South Africa’s Aiden Markram batted for nearly six hours to make 75, but the Proteas could not mount a sufficient response.
Proteas coach Shukri Conrad said he would like to see more fight from his side, adding that the performance was concerning. He also noted that several batsmen need to step up after a series of short starts on a good wicket.
The defeat ended South Africa’s 12-match unbeaten run in Tests. Analysts highlighted that many of the South African batsmen, including Tristan Stubbs and Ryan Rickelton, have limited experience against top-ranked opposition, which may have contributed to their struggles.
Bowling also fell short of expectations. While Anrich Nortje took four wickets, other pace options such as Wiaan Mulder and Marco Jansen were less effective, and spinners Simon Harmer and Keshav Maharaj did not perform at their usual level. Conrad praised Nortje’s return but said the spin department was not as sharp as usual.
With the second Test scheduled to begin in five days in Gqeberha, South Africa will look to address the issues exposed in Durban before hosting England later in the year.
