One dead and several injured after Six Flags Over Georgia roller coaster incident

Summary

A fatality and multiple injuries were reported when the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia stopped mid-ride, prompting an investigation by local authorities.

One person was killed and several others injured after the Goliath roller coaster at Six Flags Over Georgia halted midway, according to the Cobb County Police Department. Aerial footage from news helicopters showed the ride stopped about halfway down its 200-foot track, with park staff assisting riders in exiting the coaster.

"We are deeply saddened by the guest incident at our park today. Our thoughts and heartfelt condolences are with the guest's family, friends, and loved ones," a Six Flags spokesperson said.

Police have opened an investigation but have not released details on how the fatality occurred. Witnesses told local media that a man was ejected from the coaster and fell onto the roof of a nearby haunted-house attraction, though these accounts have not been independently verified.

"The city's public safety director is coordinating with local police and park security on the situation," Mableton Mayor Michael Owens said.

The Goliath ride, which opened in 2006, features a 170-foot drop, a 540-degree spiral and reaches speeds of up to 70 mph. Six Flags confirmed its cooperation with investigators and noted that the ride had passed safety tests. The incident follows a recent closure of the X2 coaster at a California Six Flags park after more than 100 riders reported brain injuries.
