Dodgers face decision on Ohtani after Game 2 NLCS loss
The Dodgers fell 7-4 to the Brewers in Game 2 of the NLCS, prompting manager Dave Roberts to consider benching Shohei Ohtani amid concerns about his health and recent performance.
The Los Angeles Dodgers trailed the Milwaukee Brewers 7-4 in Game 2 of the National League Championship Series, extending the Brewers' series lead to 2-0. The loss highlighted the Dodgers' struggles against Milwaukee's bullpen and a continued slump for slugger Shohei Ohtani, who went hitless in four at-bats.
Freddie Freeman said after the game, > “They all throw 100 [mph] from different angles.” The Brewers' relievers combined for five perfect innings, a postseason record, while Dodgers starter Yoshinobu Yamamoto lasted only 2⅔ innings, allowing three runs.
Dodgers manager Dave Roberts told The Athletic that he would “have a conversation” with Ohtani on Tuesday to decide “what’s best for him, what’s best for [the team].” A source familiar with the situation, who was not authorized to speak publicly, indicated that Ohtani is likely still dealing with lingering left-knee and right-biceps issues that have affected his swing.
Teoscar Hernández expressed concern for the Japanese star, saying, > “It’s tough. We obviously need his help. He’s a big, big part of this team, and it’s really important. I feel bad for him. I know what he’s capable of.”
The Dodgers' offense managed only three hits, their fewest in a playoff game since 2020, and were unable to capitalize on early scoring opportunities. Mookie Betts noted, > “The guys in here are really good at staying together. I don’t think there’s much doubt going on. I think we just need to regroup and figure out what we need to do individually.”
If Los Angeles hopes to stay alive in the series, it will need to find ways to break through the Brewers' suffocating bullpen or generate early leads and protect them.
