Terence Crawford Defeats Canelo Alvarez to Become Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion
Terence Crawford secured a unanimous decision victory over Canelo Alvarez, becoming the first male boxer to achieve undisputed status in three weight classes.
Terence Crawford achieved a unanimous decision victory over Canelo Alvarez on Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, becoming the undisputed super middleweight champion. The judges scored the bout 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113 in favor of Crawford.
With this win, Crawford (42-0, 31 KOs) becomes the first male boxer in the four-belt era to hold undisputed titles in three weight classes, having previously achieved this at junior welterweight and welterweight.
Crawford, who moved up from 154 pounds to 168 pounds for this fight, utilized his speed and agility to outmaneuver Alvarez. He effectively employed his jab and landed combinations throughout the 12-round contest, preventing Alvarez from delivering his signature power punches.
Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KOs), who had been undefeated at super middleweight, struggled to mount significant offense against Crawford's strategy. Despite his efforts, Alvarez was unable to impose his will on his opponent.
The fight attracted an announced crowd of 70,482 at Allegiant Stadium, with many in attendance supporting Alvarez. The event was also streamed live on Netflix, reaching millions of viewers worldwide.
Following the match, Crawford expressed respect for Alvarez, stating, "Canelo is a great champion. I have to take my hat off to him. He's a great competitor, and I have great respect for him. He fought like a champion."
Alvarez acknowledged the challenge posed by Crawford, saying, "I feel great to share the ring with great fighters like him. If we do it again, then it'll be great. I already accomplished a lot in boxing. My legacy is already there, and I like taking risks because I love boxing."
