Georgia climbs to top of AP Top 25 after Alabama win

Summary

Georgia claimed the No. 1 spot in the AP college football poll after a 20-17 victory over Alabama, while Texas fell to No. 7 and Oregon and Florida dropped out of the top 25.

Georgia moved into the No. 1 position in the AP Top 25 after beating Alabama 20-17 in Tuscaloosa, capturing all but three of the 69 first-place votes in the post-Week 6 poll. Alabama slipped to No. 6 despite the loss.

Texas, which lost 27-24 to Oklahoma on a last-second field goal, dropped six places to No. 7. Behind the Bulldogs, Notre Dame, Miami, Ohio State and Indiana rounded out the top five, each posting wins in Week 6.

BYU held steady at No. 8, followed by Ole Miss and Texas Tech at No. 9 and No. 10 respectively. LSU’s defeat to Kentucky helped the Tigers remain in the top 10, while Texas fell 12 spots to No. 22 after its loss.

Kentucky re-entered the top 25 at No. 15, joining eight other SEC teams in the top 16. Oregon (No. 13) and Florida (No. 16) fell out of the poll after home defeats; Oregon lost 17-15 to UCLA despite seven turnovers and the absence of quarterback Dante Moore, while Florida was beaten by an winless South Carolina squad.

UCLA rose nine spots to No. 12 after its victory over Oregon. The poll’s top 20 now includes matchups such as No. 4 Ohio State vs. No. 5 Indiana and No. 2 Notre Dame vs. No. 8 BYU, with several other top-10 teams slated for key games next weekend.
