Sprint race at Singapore GP sees Verstappen win, Russell crashes out
Max Verstappen claimed victory in the wet Singapore Grand Prix sprint, while George Russell retired early after a misjudged move, and McLaren lost points following a teammate collision.
Max Verstappen secured first place in the sixth and final sprint of the 2026 Formula 1 season at the Singapore Grand Prix, extending his lead in the drivers' standings. Lewis Hamilton finished second after an early surge past his teammate and the McLarens, while Kimi Antonelli took fourth, benefiting from a crash involving Russell and a late-race incident that eliminated two cars ahead of him.
George Russell, who had taken the lead at the start, retired on the first lap after a heavy crash. > "I just misjudged it," Russell said, describing the incident as an "overly confident, very silly mistake" caused by unexpected battery power exiting the final corner.
McLaren suffered a further setback when Lando Norris attempted an aggressive overtaking move on the final lap, resulting in both McLaren cars spinning and ending Oscar Piastri's race. The incident may lead to a penalty for Norris and cost the team a single point.
Other notable performances included Liam Lawson, who finished fifth by maintaining composure amid the chaos, and Ollie Bearman, who climbed to sixth after overtaking Pierre Gasly following a safety-car restart. Isack Hadjar and two Cadillac drivers retired due to technical issues and collisions, respectively.
The race highlighted the challenges of wet conditions, with several drivers losing positions or retiring after errors or contact, while Verstappen's win reinforced his status as the season's leading driver.
