Trump Urges NATO to Halt Russian Oil Purchases, Proposes Tariffs on China
President Donald Trump calls on NATO members to cease buying Russian oil and suggests imposing tariffs on China to pressure Russia over the Ukraine conflict.
President Donald Trump has urged NATO member countries to stop purchasing oil from Russia and proposed imposing tariffs ranging from 50% to 100% on China for its continued imports of Russian petroleum. Trump stated that such measures would pressure Russia to end its war in Ukraine, which began with its 2022 invasion.
In a post on his social media platform, Trump criticized NATO's commitment to resolving the conflict, describing it as "far less than 100%," and labeled the purchase of Russian oil by some alliance members as "shocking." He emphasized that these actions weaken the negotiating position over Russia.
According to the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air, NATO member Turkey has been the third-largest buyer of Russian oil since 2023, following China and India. Other alliance members involved in purchasing Russian oil include Hungary and Slovakia.
Trump suggested that China holds significant influence over Russia and that imposing substantial tariffs could disrupt that control, potentially accelerating the end of the war. He has already implemented a 25% import tax on goods from India due to its energy trade with Russia.
In his post, Trump attributed responsibility for the ongoing conflict to his predecessor, Joe Biden, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, notably excluding Russian President Vladimir Putin, who initiated the invasion.
These remarks follow a recent meeting of Group of Seven finance ministers, during which U.S. officials advocated for a unified economic front to cut off revenues funding Russia's military operations.
