Summary

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear faces criticism from Texas Democrats for allegedly prioritizing personal ambitions over support for gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa, as funding for her campaign remains a contentious issue.

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear, who chairs the Democratic Governors Association (DGA), is under scrutiny from Texas Democrats for not providing sufficient support to gubernatorial candidate Gina Hinojosa. Critics, including Texas Representative Sylvia Garcia, claim that Beshear's focus on his book tour and potential 2028 presidential run is overshadowing the urgent need for financial backing in Hinojosa's campaign against Republican Governor Greg Abbott.

Hinojosa's campaign initially requested $10 million from the DGA but has since reduced its ask to $3 million. The DGA recently announced a $1 million investment in her campaign, but further funding remains uncertain. Garcia expressed concern that Beshear's actions could alienate Latino voters, stating, "If that’s the case, then he is going to have a Latino problem in 2028."

Beshear's aides have dismissed the accusations, arguing that the DGA's polling indicates Hinojosa is trailing by five points, complicating the decision to allocate more resources to Texas. They also noted that funding is being directed toward other competitive gubernatorial races in Arizona and Nevada, which are perceived as more viable for Democrats.

During a recent Zoom meeting with DGA officials, Representative Veronica Escobar emphasized the importance of Hinojosa's potential victory for future elections, highlighting Texas's significance in the presidential race. DGA executive director Meghan Meehan-Draper attributed the funding challenges to campaign finance constraints and limited resources.

Despite the tensions, some Latino leaders, including Juan Proaño of the League of United Latin American Citizens, acknowledged the broader challenges the DGA faces and expressed support for Beshear's outreach efforts. New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham urged unity among Democrats, emphasizing the need to invest in Hispanic communities.

In response to the funding concerns, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker committed $1 million to Hinojosa's campaign, reinforcing the urgency for increased financial support as early voting approaches. Hinojosa's campaign remains optimistic, with a spokesperson expressing gratitude for the assistance received thus far.
