Week 5 NFL receiver matchups: slot and boundary analysis

Summary

Analyst Denny Carter identifies the most favorable and unfavorable slot and boundary receiving matchups for Week 5, highlighting players such as Parker Washington, Dalton Kincaid and Malik Nabers.

Analyst Denny Carter evaluated the Week 5 matchups for NFL slot and boundary receivers, using target-share metrics alongside adjusted yards per attempt and completion rate over expected. He noted that the Jacksonville Jaguars’ slot receiver Parker Washington could benefit against the Philadelphia Eagles, who rank 19th in adjusted yards per slot target, though the Eagles’ strong run defense may limit overall volume. Brenton Strange, also a primary slot option for Jacksonville, posted a higher fantasy points per route run than several peers.

For the Buffalo Bills, slot tight end Dalton Kincaid faces a Los Angeles Rams secondary that allows the league’s second-highest target rate to inside receivers. The Rams’ focus on defending boundary wideouts could increase Kincaid’s opportunities, as could fellow slot player Khalil Shakir, who leads Buffalo in slot route usage.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ Roman Wilson is projected to see a favorable slot matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, whose secondary has allowed the highest completion rate over expected on slot routes. Tight end Pat Freiermuth, also used heavily from the slot, may serve as a streaming option given the Colts’ tendency to target tight ends.

On the boundary side, Giants wideout Malik Nabers is expected to thrive against the Washington Commanders, who have allowed a league-high rate of boundary targets and efficient production. Similarly, Lions receivers Jameson Williams and Isaac TeSlaa face a Arizona Cardinals defense that ranks among the worst in adjusted yards per attempt to outside receivers, making TeSlaa a potential flex play.

In Chicago, wide receiver Rome Odunze has accounted for a significant share of the Bears’ air yards and could benefit from the Green Bay Packers’ vulnerability to boundary receivers, despite the high variance associated with his usage.
