Tyler James Robinson, a 22-year-old from Washington, Utah, has been arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder in connection with the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk during a speech at Utah Valley University. Robinson is also facing charges of felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily harm and obstruction of justice.
According to a probable cause statement, Robinson's family reported that he had recently become "more political" and had expressed opposition to Kirk's viewpoints during a recent dinner conversation. Utah Governor Spencer Cox stated that a family member reached out to a friend with information that Robinson had "confessed" or implied involvement in the shooting, leading to his arrest.
Authorities believe Robinson acted alone. Evidence includes messages on the social media platform Discord, where Robinson discussed obtaining and disposing of a bolt-action rifle, which was later recovered near the campus. Ammunition found at the scene bore provocative inscriptions, such as "Hey fascist, catch!" and "Bella Ciao," referencing an Italian anti-fascist song.
Robinson, who attended Utah State University in 2021 on a prestigious academic scholarship, is currently enrolled as a third-year student in the electrical apprenticeship program at Dixie Technical College in St. George. He has no prior criminal record.
Charlie Kirk, 31, was a prominent conservative figure and founder of Turning Point USA. His death has sparked widespread condemnation across political lines and from international observers.
