Broncos to give Sean Payton larger role in playcalling for upcoming game
Denver will involve head coach Sean Payton more directly in game-day playcalling as the team seeks to improve its struggling offense ahead of Sunday’s matchup with the Los Angeles Chargers.
Denver will adopt a more collaborative playcalling approach on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers as the Broncos try to revive a sluggish offense, sources told ESPN and NFL Network. Head coach Sean Payton, who handed playcalling duties to first-year offensive coordinator Davis Webb during the offseason, will take a larger role in the game-day operation, though Webb is expected to remain on the headset for quarterback Bo Nix.
Payton, who has continued to participate in offensive meetings and game planning, is slated to be more active on the headsets before and during the Broncos' possessions than he has been in the first four games. He said his focus is on “the specific and the detail of each play,” adding that Webb is “very fast, very quick and understands what we’re doing.”
The Broncos, sitting at 2-2, rank near the bottom of the league in several offensive categories, including scoring (27th) and total yards per game (27th). Quarterback Bo Nix is 22nd in QBR and 27th in average air yards per attempt, while the team is 29th in plays of 20 or more yards and 30th in explosive plays.
Payton emphasized that the team’s issues stem from “the details, the little things,” and said improving attention to detail should help the offense. Coordinators, including Webb, are scheduled to speak after practice.
