Arizona Democratic congressional candidate alleges August sexual assault, suspects political motive

Summary

Democratic candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia says she was attacked and raped while posting campaign signs in August and believes the assailants targeted her because of her political profile. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating.

Bernadette Greene-Placentia, a 52-year-old Democratic candidate for Arizona’s 8th Congressional District, told the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office that she was assaulted around 2 a.m. on Aug. 14 while returning to her car in Sun City. According to an incident report, she said a man struck her in the back of the head, rendering her unconscious, and then a second man climbed on top of her as she attempted to resist. Greene-Placentia reported the incident to police on Aug. 31 and told investigators she believed the attackers recognized her as a political figure.

The report notes that Greene-Placentia recalled hearing one suspect use a derogatory term that she interpreted as “democratic b----.” She said she did not see the attackers’ faces and that she did not undergo a forensic sexual-assault exam, though she noted bruises on her back and arms. Her campaign manager confirmed that volunteers often work late-night hours to install signs and avoid daytime heat.

Greene-Placentia said she initially kept the assault private because she felt embarrassed about not being able to defend herself, but later decided to report it after reflecting on her commitment to advocate for others. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation remains ongoing and has not provided an update on suspect identification. The Arizona attorney general’s office declined to comment, stating it is not involved.

State officials responded to the allegations. Senator Ruben Gallego expressed “heartbreak” and called for accountability, while Governor Katie Hobbs said she was “outraged” by the “cruel and cowardly attack” and affirmed that violence will not be tolerated in Arizona.

"No one should have to fear for their safety, or the safety of the people they love, while serving their community," the governor’s statement read.

Authorities continue to investigate the case, and the victim’s well-being remains a focus for local officials.
