Arizona Democratic congressional candidate alleges assault while working on campaign signage
Bernadette Greene-Placentia, a Democratic candidate for Arizona's 8th district, reported being raped by two men in Sun City on Aug. 14. The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident.
Bernadette Greene-Placentia, the Democratic nominee for Arizona’s 8th congressional district, told authorities she was assaulted while repairing a campaign sign in Sun City on the night of Aug. 14. According to an incident report from the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, two unidentified men struck her in the back of the head, causing her to lose consciousness, and subsequently raped her. Greene-Placentia said she woke with bruises on her arms and a bump on her head, and experienced vaginal bleeding for several days.
She reported the assault to the sheriff’s office on Aug. 31, more than two weeks after the attack. The report notes she did not seek medical treatment or preserve evidence, having washed her clothing and taken showers shortly after the incident. Investigators recorded that she recalled one assailant wearing black boots and hearing a derogatory remark, though she could not confirm the exact words.
Greene-Placentia disclosed the assault publicly after discussing it with her husband and campaign staff, saying she felt compelled to speak out so other survivors would know they are not alone. A campaign spokesperson said she shared her story to help others who may be silent.
Incumbent Rep. Abraham Hamadeh called for a thorough investigation, including review of any available camera footage, and urged law enforcement to pursue the case fully. The sheriff’s office continues to investigate, and the identities of the two men remain unknown.
