Seahawks abandon plan to add veteran running back Joe Mixon after failed physical

Summary

Seattle decided not to sign former Bengals and Texans running back Joe Mixon following a physical, and will instead target another practice-squad player.

Seattle Seahawks officials said the team will not add veteran running back Joe Mixon after he did not pass a physical exam. The decision was reported by ESPN and follows the Seahawks' earlier interest in bolstering a thin running-back group that has been hit by injuries. The club now intends to sign Robert Henry Jr., currently on the Washington Commanders' practice squad, as a replacement.

The Seahawks have been dealing with multiple setbacks at the position. Rookie Jadarian Price is on injured reserve with a chest injury expected to keep him out for at least four games, and Zach Charbonnet remains sidelined after a torn ACL, although his 21-day practice window opened Thursday, indicating a possible near-term return. In the meantime, backup Emanuel Wilson carried the load against the Los Angeles Chargers, recording 81 rushing yards and a touchdown on 21 carries, plus three receptions for 39 yards and another score.

"This is just what happens in football. Unfortunately, injuries happen," head coach Mike Macdonald said. "He can't control these things. He's done everything we've asked him to do since he got here. He's had a great attitude. He's been a great teammate. He has a great future. He's going to play great football for us when he comes back, whenever that is ... It's just unfortunate."

Mixon, a seven-year veteran who posted four 1,000-yard seasons with the Cincinnati Bengals and earned Pro Bowl honors in 2021 and 2024, was most recently with the Houston Texans, where he rushed for 1,016 yards and 11 touchdowns last season.
