GOP strategists warn Trump is priming election-loss narrative ahead of midterms

Résumé

Veteran Republican consultants say President Trump’s recent claims of election fraud are setting the stage for him to dispute November results if Republicans perform poorly in the upcoming congressional elections.

President Donald Trump has reiterated claims that delayed vote counts in several cities and states indicate a "rigged" and "corrupt" election system, without providing evidence. The remarks have prompted veteran GOP strategists to caution that the president is preparing a narrative to blame any Republican losses on alleged fraud.

"The president appears to be setting up a story in which a Republican win proves the system works and a Republican loss proves it was stolen," said Brittany Martinez, executive director of the Principles First organization. Political consultant Matt Klink added that Trump is "already beginning to write the excuse before a single ballot is cast."

White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis responded that Americans deserve to know election results on election night. Meanwhile, the Justice Department announced plans to deploy more than a thousand election monitors nationwide, a move defended by Attorney General Todd Blanche as a standard practice.

Recent polling and simulation models give Democrats a strong lead for both the House and Senate in the November 3 midterm elections. Republican Senator Thom Tillis described a House loss as "almost statistically impossible" for the GOP, though he expressed optimism about retaining the Senate.

Analysts warned that if Republicans lose control of Congress, Trump is likely to issue further statements questioning the vote count, urging the party to focus on improving election administration rather than alleging fraud.
