Premier League clubs call for extensive penalties on Manchester City after financial breaches
Several Premier League clubs are urging that Manchester City receive both retrospective and future sanctions for confirmed violations of financial regulations, arguing that a single points deduction would be insufficient.
A group of Premier League club executives have said that if Manchester City’s appeal against an independent commission’s ruling is rejected, the club should face penalties that address past violations and limit its future operations. The commission found City guilty of all charges related to breaches of the league’s financial rules between the 2009-10 and 2017-18 seasons.
Club sources indicated that a one-season points deduction leading to relegation would not reflect the seriousness of the infractions. Some executives suggested that any points deduction be spread over several seasons and that transfer bans covering multiple windows could further deter a rapid return to the top flight.
One senior source said the club should be stripped of the eight league titles it won during the period in question, noting that keeping those trophies could damage the league’s credibility. However, other clubs reportedly show little appetite for stripping titles, preferring instead to leave the honours vacant.
The discussion reflects broader concerns that a single-season sanction would act only as a temporary setback, allowing the club to regain Premier League status quickly.
