Seahawks add veteran running back Joe Mixon to practice squad

Summary

Seattle signed former Cincinnati and Houston running back Joe Mixon to its practice squad after a workout, pending a medical exam.

Seattle held a workout for veteran running back Joe Mixon on Tuesday, the day after placing first-round pick Jadarian Price on injured reserve. Sources say the team and Mixon have reached an agreement that will place him on the 16-man practice squad, contingent on clearing a medical examination.

"Mixon will join the Hawks’ P-squad," reported ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, citing confirmation from Seahawks defensive coordinator Mike Macdonald.

If approved, Mixon, 30, would become the third running back on Seattle’s depth chart behind Emanuel Wilson and George Holani, with Zach Charbonnet also expected to return to practice soon after recovering from an ACL injury.

Mixon spent the 2025 season on the Houston Texans’ reserve/NFI list after foot surgery limited him to a single healthy season with the team, during which he recorded 1,016 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. The Texans released him in the offseason, and his health status remained unclear until the recent medical clearance.

Seattle’s rushing attack, ranked 13th in the league, has been anchored by Wilson since Price’s injury. The addition of Mixon provides additional depth as the Seahawks navigate the early weeks of the season, with the possibility of elevating him to the active roster if needed.
