Chiefs defeat Raiders as Mahomes and defense make key contributions

Summary

Kansas City held off Las Vegas 31-28, with quarterback Patrick Mahomes leading the offense and several defensive players recording impactful plays.

Kansas City maintained its unbeaten record after edging Las Vegas 31-28 on Sunday. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes endured two sacks and eight hits but continued to connect on deep passes, including a long throw to wide receiver Xavier Worthy that set up a touchdown for Tyquan Thornton. Thornton, filling in for the injured Rashee Rice, recorded five receptions for 111 yards and two scores.

Defensive end George Karlaftis was active in the second half, registering six quarterback hits, a batted pass and a tackle for loss, while a sack was nullified by a holding penalty on teammate L'Jarius Sneed. Cornerback Mansoor Delane contributed ten tackles and broke up a screen pass and a tight-end route in the first half. Punter Matt Araiza converted a fake punt and consistently pinned the Raiders inside their own 20-yard line.

Other notable performances included defensive end Felix Anudike-Uzomah, who applied pressure and recorded a tackle for loss, running back Kenneth Walker III, who posted a 76-yard run – the longest of the season – and added two touchdowns in the final minutes, and linebacker Drue Tranquill, who logged two tackles for loss, a pass breakup and a quarterback hit.

The Raiders’ scoring drives were aided by penalties and coverage lapses. Linebacker Nick Bolton was beaten on two pass plays that resulted in a touchdown, while cornerback Nohl Williams incurred penalties that set up two field goals. Offensive line substitutions on the left side, including Jaylon Moore and Mike Caliendo, struggled to protect Mahomes, prompting criticism of the coaching staff’s personnel choices.

"We stayed focused and executed in the key moments," a Chiefs spokesperson said after the game.

The win keeps Kansas City atop the AFC West as the teams prepare for the upcoming bye week.
