Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame" Reclaims Top Spot as Highest-Grossing Film
"Avengers: Endgame" has surpassed "Avatar" to become the highest-grossing movie worldwide, reaching $2.925 billion after a recent re-release.
"Avengers: Endgame" has reclaimed the record for the highest global box-office earnings, overtaking James Cameron's 2009 film "Avatar" by a narrow margin. The 2019 Marvel Studios release now totals $2.925 billion worldwide, just above "Avatar"'s $2.923 billion, after Disney's recent theatrical re-release added roughly $126 million.
The two titles have swapped the top position several times as each has returned to cinemas for multiple engagements. "Avatar" held the record for a decade before "Endgame" first surpassed it in 2019, then fell to second place in 2021 when a new "Avatar" sequel was released.
Disney, which acquired 20th Century Fox in 2019, now controls the majority of the all-time highest-grossing films, including "Avatar," "Avatar: The Way of Water," "Titanic," and "Avengers: Infinity War." The studio is using the "Endgame" re-release to build anticipation for the upcoming "Avengers: Doomsday," slated for December and directed by the Russo brothers.
"Avengers: Endgame" was the culmination of 21 movies over a ten-year period, featuring an ensemble cast that includes Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman and Anthony Mackie.
Industry analysts note that the re-release has generated strong box-office returns and heightened interest among theater operators for the forthcoming MCU installment, which is expected to be a major revenue driver for the franchise.
