US Marine Arrested in Okinawa on Murder Suspicion
A U.S. Marine stationed in Okinawa has been detained on suspicion of murdering a 39-year-old Japanese woman at a hotel, prompting diplomatic protests and calls for tighter discipline.
A U.S. Marine stationed on Okinawa was arrested on suspicion of murdering a 39-year-old Japanese woman at a hotel in Naha and stealing her wallet and backpack, police said. The suspect, identified as Lance Corporal Devin Jacob Ballard, 20, denied the allegations. CCTV footage reportedly showed a foreign man entering a room with a woman and later leaving with her belongings, leading police to detain a man matching the description.
"We have lost a family member and are deeply saddened," the victim's brother said through local police.
Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said Japan had lodged a protest with U.S. authorities and described the crime as "exceptionally brutal and vicious," urging maximum cooperation and stricter discipline for U.S. personnel. U.S. Ambassador George Glass expressed condolences to the victim's family and pledged cooperation with the investigation.
The incident adds to longstanding tensions over crimes involving U.S. service members in Okinawa, which hosts about 70% of the U.S. military presence in Japan. Japan's defense minister Shinjiro Koizumi warned that such incidents cause great anxiety among the local community and must be prevented.
