Apple iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra compete on price, design and features

Summary

The iPhone 18 Pro Max and Galaxy S26 Ultra, released in 2026, offer similar specifications but differ in design, camera options, software and price tiers.

Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra are the flagship non-foldable smartphones from the two manufacturers in 2026. Both devices launched earlier this year, are available worldwide and start at roughly $1,300 for the base 256 GB model. Higher-capacity versions of the iPhone are priced above comparable Samsung models, with the iPhone offering up to 2 TB of storage, a capacity not offered by the Galaxy.

The iPhone retains a design similar to its predecessor, featuring an aluminum frame, glass back and a reduced Dynamic Island cut-out. It measures 163.4 × 78 × 8.8 mm and weighs 249 g. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra adopts a slightly more angular shape, includes a slot for the S Pen stylus, and is marginally lighter at 214 g. Both phones have IP68 water resistance, though Samsung’s rating is tested to a shallower depth.

Both smartphones sport 6.9-inch OLED displays with 120 Hz refresh rates. Samsung’s panel has a higher pixel density (≈500 ppi) and a 2,600-nit peak brightness, while Apple’s screen reaches 3,000 nits. The Galaxy adds a Privacy Display that obscures the screen when viewed from an angle, a feature absent on the iPhone.

Camera systems differ markedly. The iPhone 18 Pro Max uses a 48 MP main sensor with a variable aperture (f/1.48-4.0) and three additional lenses, offering up to 40× digital zoom. Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra employs a 200 MP primary sensor, a 50 MP ultra-wide lens, and two telephoto lenses (5× and 3× optical zoom) plus up to 100× digital zoom. Reviewers noted the iPhone produces more neutral colors, while the Galaxy delivers more saturated images.

Performance is comparable, with Apple’s A20 Pro chipset and 12 GB RAM versus Samsung’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with 12-16 GB RAM. Both include vapor-chamber cooling. Software diverges: the iPhone runs iOS 27, emphasizing privacy and a uniform interface, whereas the Galaxy runs Android 17, offering greater customization. Samsung pledged seven major Android updates; Apple typically provides a similar update lifespan.

Battery capacity favors the iPhone, which houses a 5,567 mAh (eSIM-only) or 5,391 mAh unit, compared with Samsung’s 5,000 mAh pack. Both claim around 30 hours of casual use and support 60 W wired and 25 W wireless charging; the iPhone also supports MagSafe charging.

In summary, the iPhone 18 Pro Max stands out for its variable aperture, larger battery and MagSafe, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra offers a lower-priced entry, an extra telephoto lens, Privacy Display and the S Pen. Review scores gave the iPhone five stars and the Galaxy 4.5 stars.
