Teen driver crashes into parked car, killing Nobu Malibu employee

Summary

A 51-year-old Nobu Malibu employee was killed when a Range Rover driven by a 16-year-old struck his parked vehicle on Pacific Coast Highway; police are investigating the incident.

A 51-year-old employee of the Nobu Malibu restaurant was fatally injured Saturday morning when a Range Rover collided with his parked car on Pacific Coast Highway, authorities said. The victim, identified as Ryo Uchimiya, had arrived early for his shift and was waiting in his vehicle outside the restaurant.

Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Sergeant John Addington reported that the Range Rover was driven by a 16-year-old boy and struck Uchimiya’s car at approximately 6:50 a.m. The officer added that the teen appeared to be speeding. No charges have been filed yet, and the investigation continues. No other injuries were reported.

The crash occurred on a 21-mile segment of the Pacific Coast Highway through Malibu, a stretch that has been labeled one of the state’s most hazardous roads, averaging about four fatal crashes per year over the past decade. The area has seen heightened safety concerns after a 2023 incident in which a driver traveling at an estimated 104 mph struck three parked cars, killing four university sorority members, leading to proposals for additional cameras and higher speeding fines. Recent construction work following the January 2025 wildfires has also resulted in reduced speed limits in the vicinity.
