Sophie Cunningham alleges double standard in WNBA disciplinary actions involving A'ja Wilson
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said the league treated Las Vegas Aces star A'ja Wilson leniently after a fan confrontation during a first-round playoff game, describing it as a double standard.
Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham said she believes the WNBA applied a double standard after Las Vegas Aces forward A'ja Wilson was not further disciplined for confronting a fan during a first-round playoff game. The incident occurred in the fourth quarter of Game 2, when a fan stood and pointed at Wilson following a foul call on Cunningham. Wilson stepped toward the fan and was pulled away by teammates, receiving only a technical foul for the play.
Cunningham expressed her view on the No Hesitation Show podcast, stating, "She's like the LeBron James of our league, and so of course they're not going to suspend her... Something should have happened. The two people who came off the bench onto the court, that should have happened. I think there's definitely a double standard." She added that ejecting Wilson could have drawn backlash against the Fever.
She also commented on broader expectations for equality in the sport, saying, "We yell from the rooftops that we want equality, that we want to be treated like the men, that we want all this stuff and we deserve all these things, and we do, we do deserve it. But if you're asking for all these fans to come— and you have new fans, who are real sports fans, and they come and do something that a sports fan would probably do if you're on the opposing team, and then you're going to go for him for just pointing, saying that you fouled? Grow up."
After the game, Wilson called the fan's behavior unacceptable and apologized to teammates for taking the technical foul. She scored 36 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in Game 3, helping the Aces eliminate the Fever and advance to the semifinals against the Golden State Valkyries.
