Poland and NATO Allies Intercept Russian Drones Violating Airspace

On the night of September 9, 2025, multiple Russian drones entered Polish airspace amid a large-scale Russian assault on Ukraine. Polish and NATO forces responded by intercepting and neutralizing the drones, marking the first confirmed instance of NATO engaging Russian military assets within its airspace since the onset of the conflict in Ukraine.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk stated that the airspace was violated by numerous Russian drones, with those posing a direct threat being shot down. Defense Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz reported that more than ten objects crossed into Polish airspace and were neutralized with assistance from NATO allies, including Dutch F-35 fighter jets.

The incursion led to temporary closures of several Polish airports, including Warsaw Chopin Airport, due to military operations. Residents in affected regions were advised to remain indoors and report any debris. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas described the incident as the most serious European airspace violation by Russia since the war began, suggesting it was intentional.

In response, Poland invoked Article 4 of the NATO treaty, calling for urgent consultations among member states. The United Nations Security Council is scheduled to hold an emergency meeting to address the situation.

The Kremlin dismissed concerns over the drone incursions, with spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stating that the Russian Defense Ministry had addressed the matter and was open to consultations if needed.

This incident underscores escalating tensions in the region and raises concerns about the potential for the conflict to spill over into NATO territories.
