Documentary 'You Can See Everything' Offers Intimate Look at Elizabeth Holmes Ahead of Prison Sentence

Summary

Directed by Nathan Fielder and Lance Oppenheim, the three-hour film follows Holmes and her husband in their final days of freedom, blending humor and investigative observation to explore truth and perception.

Nathan Fielder, working with co-director Lance Oppenheim, released the documentary You Can See Everything at the New York Film Festival. The film, which runs just under three hours, follows Elizabeth Holmes and her husband Billy Evans during the five weeks before Holmes began serving her prison term in May 2023.

Fielder conducts a series of conversations with the couple, including a scene in which Holmes watches the classic comedy routine "Who’s on First?" for the first time and is unable to answer the key question about the first baseman. Holmes maintains that she has never lied, while Fielder’s questioning highlights the gap between her public statements and the documentary’s portrayal.

The filmmakers were granted extensive access by Evans, who arranged the project and described his wife as thinking "differently." The first hour captures the family’s stay at a beachside cottage in Del Mar, with Fielder observing their interactions. After Holmes begins her sentence at a minimum-security prison in Bryan, Texas, the focus shifts to Evans and the broader ethical considerations of documentary filmmaking.

The documentary, scheduled for theatrical release by A24 on October 16, examines how the subjects’ motivations, the filmmakers’ methods, and editorial choices shape audience perception of truth. It raises questions about the line between performance and authenticity in nonfiction storytelling.
