U.S. Deploys Additional Carrier Group to Middle East Amid Rising Tensions with Iran
President Trump announced the deployment of a third aircraft carrier and thousands of troops to the Middle East, citing possible links between Iran and a recent airline attack and hinting at further escalation after the U.S. midterm elections.
President Donald Trump said the United States is moving a third aircraft carrier and additional forces to the Middle East as tensions with Iran rise. The deployment includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, the cruiser USS Chosin, and the amphibious readiness group centered on the USS Makin Island, together carrying more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marines. If confirmed, officials expect three carriers could be operating in the region by the end of October, raising the total U.S. naval presence to over 20,000 personnel and hundreds of aircraft.
Trump told reporters that early indications link Iran to the FlyDubai co-pilot who attempted to crash an Israel-bound flight, and he said the United States would retaliate if the connection is verified. "I would say the answer, based on what I’m hearing, is ‘yes,’ but we’re working on it right now," he said, adding, "They’ll be hit very hard, don’t worry."
In a separate interview, Trump suggested the United States might increase bombing of Iran after the November 3 midterm elections, though he declined to provide details on potential targets. He also rejected a recent Iranian cease-fire proposal, describing it as insufficient, and cited Iran’s offer to open the Strait of Hormuz as an example of an inadequate concession.
The deployment follows the recent arrest in the United Kingdom of a dual U.K.–Iranian national suspected of plotting a terror attack linked to a U.S. military air base used for strikes against Iran. British authorities have also detained several other individuals in connection with the incident.
U.S. officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, indicated that the expanded naval presence reflects a shift toward a more robust posture as diplomatic efforts with Tehran stall.
