Israeli Airstrike in Doha Targets Hamas Leaders, Escalating Regional Tensions
An Israeli airstrike in Doha aimed at Hamas leaders has intensified regional tensions, drawing condemnation from Qatar and other nations.
On September 9, 2025, Israel conducted an airstrike in Doha, Qatar, targeting senior Hamas leaders. The operation aimed at figures including Khalil al-Hayya, Zaher Jabarin, Muhammad Ismail Darwish, and Khaled Mashal, who were reportedly meeting to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire proposal for Gaza. While the targeted leaders survived, the strike resulted in the deaths of six individuals, including al-Hayya's son and a Qatari security officer.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu defended the strike, stating that countries harboring Hamas leaders must "expel" them or "bring them to justice, because if you don't, we will." He compared the operation to U.S. actions following the September 11 attacks, emphasizing Israel's commitment to pursuing those responsible for the October 7, 2023, assault.
Qatar condemned the airstrike as a "cowardly Israeli attack" and a violation of international law and its sovereignty. The Qatari Foreign Ministry stated that the country "will not tolerate this reckless and irresponsible Israeli behavior, which continuously undermines the region's security."
The United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres also condemned the strike, describing it as a "flagrant violation of the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Qatar." He noted that Qatar has been playing a positive role in achieving a ceasefire and the release of hostages, urging all parties to work towards a permanent ceasefire.
The airstrike has further strained Israel's relations with regional and international partners, complicating ongoing ceasefire negotiations and raising concerns about escalating tensions in the Middle East.
