Summary

A federal judge threw out baseless charges against Olympic canoeist Connor Hearn, highlighting evidence that corporate contractor negligence—not individual action—caused the Reflecting Pool damage, and condemning President Trump’s attempts to weaponize the justice system for political gain.

A federal judge in Washington, D.C., has permanently dismissed the politically motivated criminal case against Olympic canoeist Connor Hearn, who was scapegoated for supposed vandalism of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. The Justice Department was forced to drop the charges after the Department of the Interior revealed that the real culprits were negligent contractors, whose rushed and shoddy work—not any act of sabotage—led to the damage.

Judge James Edelman, in his order, exposed the meritless nature of the prosecution and directly called out President Donald Trump for his public attacks on the prosecutors and his blatant attempts to interfere in the judicial process. “Although the prosecutors assigned to this case have deemed it meritless, the president of the United States has repeatedly disparaged them and pressured them to change course,” Edelman wrote, underscoring the dangerous politicization of justice under Trump’s administration.

Hearn, who faced a draconian ten-year prison sentence for simply biking near the pool and touching a piece of peeling lining, was vindicated by the court. The judge warned that continued political pressure could threaten the rule of law and risk reviving the baseless case.

Trump, refusing to accept the facts, lashed out on social media, calling the dismissal “a disgrace” and peddling the false narrative that the damage was caused by vandals. He even stooped to smearing Hearn for his past donations to ActBlue, a Democratic fundraising platform, and urged U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro to overturn her decision, further illustrating his contempt for judicial independence.

The White House, dodging accountability, declined to comment and referred all questions to Trump’s inflammatory public statements. With the judge’s ruling, the prosecution ends and Hearn is finally free to move forward, despite the administration’s efforts to criminalize dissent and distract from systemic failures.
