Cowboys' trade for Joey Porter Jr. includes conditional draft pick protections
Dallas acquired former Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. with a 2027 sixth-round pick contingent on his early-season participation and retains a compensatory pick if he departs as a free agent.
Dallas obtained former Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. in a trade that includes safeguards for the team. The agreement ties the 2027 sixth-round selection to Porter being on the active roster for at least two games, a condition expected to be met if he plays in the upcoming matchup against the Houston Texans. The 2028 second-round pick carries no such restriction, but the Cowboys would receive a 2028 third-round compensatory pick if Porter leaves Dallas as a free agent in March. Should Porter miss the early games due to lingering back or conditioning concerns, the Cowboys retain the 2027 sixth-round pick.
"The sixth-round pick is linked to Porter being on the gameday roster for at least two games," reported ESPN's Todd Archer.
If Porter suits up for the Texans game, the condition will likely be satisfied, preserving the trade's intended value for Dallas.
